Gavin Cromwell's nine-year-old on course for return to Aintree to try and improve on runner-up finish last year
Trainer Gavin Cromwell is confident that last year's runner-up Vanillier can go close again in the Randox Grand National at Aintree Racecourse a week on Saturday.
Cromwell, speaking exclusively to the Liverpool ECHO courtesy of William Hill at Aintree Racecourse, said: "It is a little bit bitter-sweet. We were delighted for him to run as well as he did but when you are a fast finisher – I know Corach Rambler looked to be idling a bit in front – but when you are coming home strong like that it is a little bit frustrating. I think the only way we would have got there was if Corach Rambler had been caught napping. But it was a great run.
"I don't know how you bridge that gap. But I suppose we have the experience of jumping around the track – that is a massive positive – and I think he has come forward since the Bobbyjo. And will go there confident he can go well."Aintree has been hit by plenty of rain this week and the course was described as being heavy in parts. Despite a mixed forecast there is more rain to come over the next week or so and the Aintree showpiece could be run in soft conditions.
