The 75-year-old grandmother began suffering with sudden, severe stomach pain along with vomiting, nausea and a fever. Despite living just five minutes from Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, she was left to suffer without any pain relief for more than eight hours before paramedics arrived. Mary died the following afternoon after being diagnosed with a bowel perforation, a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical care. The chances of recovery improve with early diagnosis and treatment.
Mr Banks said: “A hole in the bowel is critical and needs to be treated urgently. My mum might still be here if an ambulance had come sooner.
The Scottish Ambulance Service recently apologised after a patient was airlifted to Glasgow Airport and no ambulance was available for a 300-yard transfer from the helipad at Crosshouse Hospital in East Ayrshire. The individual had to be driven 26 miles from the airport to the hospital.
