33, with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault.Staff at Nowland’s nursing home called police on May 17 after the mother of eight, who uses a walking frame and weighs 43kg, was allegedly holding a steak knife.Credit:Assistant Commissioner Peter Cotter said paramedics and centre staff tried to “de-escalate the matter” before Nowland moved towards police with the knife and was tasered.
But the guidelines also list a range of situations where a Taser should not be used “unless exceptional circumstances exist”. Australia’s top body for dementia education says the tragedy highlighted the need for better education and skills to handle those in care. “It’s difficult to imagine any circumstances where a frail 95-year-old woman poses a credible threat to anyone - let alone two police officers,” Pallas said earlier.
