A ceremony will honor the memory of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot firefighters who lost their lives while battling the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013.
A ceremony is set to take place in Prescott Sunday afternoon, on the 11th anniversary of the deadly Yarnell Hill Fire.According to officials, a memorial sculpture honoring the 19 fallen firefighters with the Granite Mountain Hotshots will be dedicated at the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza. This will be followed by the ringing of the courthouse's bells. The bells will ring 19 times, once for each of the fallen firefighters.The Yarnell Hill Fire burned in 2013.
The gusty, hot winds caused the fire to intensify to more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and cut off the firefighters’ escape route, killing the men, authorities said.The only surviving crew member, Brendan McDonough, was posted away from the group as a lookout when the flames overtook the other Hotshots.
