The island, despite having no permanent residents, welcomes approximately 40,000 tourists annually and is situated off the coast of Dunquin near Dingle, Ireland . The chosen pair will be responsible for daily tasks such as preparing the coffee shop , cleaning holiday homes, and checking in guests - potentially without a day off for weeks, depending on the weather.
On the positive side, their rent will be covered, and they will reside in the main bedroom above the coffee shop, utilizing the shop's facilities. Laundry will be handled on the mainland, and food supplies will be delivered daily. During the busy summer months, volunteer helpers may also stay in the second bedroom upstairs, providing companionship during long evenings. However, those who value cleanliness and enjoy an occasional evening drink must come prepared, as these items are not included in the food supplies. Covering four miles and encompassing over 1,100 acres of wild landscape, the island has been uninhabited since 1953. It is recognized as one of the most secluded Irish-speaking regions in Corca Dhuibhne. Accessing Great Blasket Island requires a ferry service, as stated on The Great Blasket Centre and Island website. They explain that services are privately operated and approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine. Emphasizing their independence, the site mentions: 'Individual ferry companies are not associated with, nor endorsed by, the Office of Public Works. There is no jetty on Great Blasket, so the final part of the journey takes place by inflatable boat.' The website advises that: 'Ferries run to the Island during the summer months, when good weather is available. The journey takes between twenty minutes and an hour, depending on which harbour the ferry departed from.
