The Great British Bake Off is back for its 15th season, but one baker has been forced to leave the hit Channel 4 baking show after falling ill one day into the competition
The Great British Bake Off is making a triumphant return to TV screens this week, sprinkling in some series firsts to spice things up. A standout moment from the very first episode on Tuesday 24 September sees one talented contestant secure the coveted 'Hollywood handshake' during their signature challenge, causing quite the stir. But there's a twist in the tent as another baker is forced to hang up their apron after falling sick just one day into the competition.
Kicking off the 15th series with a flourish, one baker wows Paul Hollywood so much that the legendary handshake is awarded within the opening moments. Yet, not all is sweet in the Bake Off tent, as on the following day, the bakers quickly note that one of their fellow contestants is missing. The lovely Alison Hammond breaks the news to them, announcing that due to illness, one baker had to withdraw, leaving just 11 to face the looming elimination threat, reports the Express.
A source on the show said: "The baker was gutted to miss out on the second day but they weren't feeling up to it and so they had to sit it out. And if thats not enough excitement for you, hold onto your aprons because the show is introducing an all-new hurdle: the 'taste and bake' challenge. The fabulous Alison Hammond revealed, "Each week the bakers will face a gingham-clad secret second challenge but this time there's an extra surprise awaiting them.
Despite the ups and downs in the competition, 44 year old palliative care assistant Nelly, who's had a journey from Slovakia to Austria before diving into nursing in the UK and is a mum of two, keeps her spirits high on the show. She shared a sweet moment with host Noel, telling him: "You are the top, the number one. I love you the most. I love your humour and half of the humour I don't even understand.
