The U.S. Coast Guard says it received calls from the 689-foot bulk carrier Michipicoten just before 7 a.m. Saturday.

Bulk carrier Michipicoten, photographed by the Coast Guard at Station Bayfield in Wisconsin on Saturday as the carrier took on water in Lake Superior.SAULT SAINTE MARIE, Michigan — Several crew members were evacuated after a nearly 700-foot-long bulk carrier reportedly struck an underwater object on Lake Superior, causing the ship to begin taking on water.

The ship was listing at about 15 degrees, but was able to reduce it to 5 degrees by using the ship’s pumps. However, half of ship’s 22-person crew was removed to safety by a boat from the National Park Service. The Coast Guard assisted the Michipicoten to Thunder Bay, Ontario to complete inspections and for repairs. The bulk carrier Edwin H. Gott sailed alongside the Michipicoten as it headed to Thunder Bay. The cause of the damaged to the ship currently is unknown.
