Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, will receive a £630 million budget with increased flexibility over how it is spent. This new integrated funding model, agreed upon by the previous Conservative government, aims to streamline funding processes and empower local decision-making. Burnham hailed this as a 'game-changing' development, stating it will allow for smarter funding of local services and a preventative approach to addressing community issues.
The Greater Manchester mayor has described the deal which gives him more flexibility over funding as 'game-changing'. The new model of funding was agreed by the last Conservative government in 2023 as part of the latest devolution deal for the city-region.
But later this year, the GMCA will get nearly £630m as part of a new integrated settlement, giving the mayor more freedom and flexibility over how it is spent. This will allow Mr Burnham to spend money on housing, transport and other key areas as he sees fit. “With more freedom and flexibility we can be even smarter about funding local services. We can take a preventative approach, getting to the root causes of the issues facing our communities and delivering more practical everyday support.
“Greater Manchester will now hold the reins on its own priorities. With Mayor Andy Burnham driving forward meaningful change for working people, this landmark funding settlement will hand Greater Manchester the keys to build more affordable homes, take back control of busses, and much more.
