National Trust’s Heritage Open Days festival gives people the chance to visit places for free - including Heaton Hall in Manchester and a heritage pub trail in Rochdale

Hundreds of historic venues and hidden buildings will open their doors for free this September as part of the National Trust’s Heritage Open Days. The programme is ‘the UK’s largest festival of history and culture’ and features thousands of free events and experiences across the country.

It’s grown from just 700 events in the first year, to over 5,250 in 2023. It includes a huge variety of locations, including factories, museums, formal gardens and historic houses. The festival’s theme this year is 'Routes - Networks - Connections' which brings together the past and present through workshops, talks, hidden spaces, walks and activities for all the family.

Among the locations and events in Greater Manchester which have already been confirmed are a heritage pub trail in Rochdale Town Centre, a tour of the Mechanics Institute in Manchester, canal history walks in Daisy Nook Country Park, tours of Stockport Town Hall and Heaton Hall open days. There are still many more to be announced and last year Victoria Baths, Castlefield Viaduct and East Lancashire Railway were among the Greater Manchester venues to be included.

Last year, more than 45,000 organisers and volunteers ran over 5,000 events across the country, attracting one million visits. Around one-third of visitors had not visited a heritage site/event in the past year while 80% of festival-goers said their visit made them more proud of their local area.
