Andy Burnham outlines plans to address homelessness in Greater Manchester using £47 million from the government. The funding will support emergency accommodation, personalized support, and the Housing First initiative.
Andy Burnham has outlined how Greater Manchester will allocate £47 million from the government to address homelessness. The government revealed on Wednesday, December 19th, that nearly £1 billion will be invested next year to assist local authorities in tackling, reducing, and preventing homelessness. Greater Manchester councils will receive over £40 million from four separate government grants.
Additionally, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) will receive nearly £6 million, bringing the total for the region to approximately £47 million. Mr. Burnham has now detailed how this funding will be utilized, emphasizing how a new funding agreement will enable him to prioritize the areas most in need. The Labour mayor's A Bed Every Night emergency accommodation scheme will provide at least 600 spaces from April, coupled with personalized, comprehensive support and dedicated programs tailored to the needs of women, veterans, LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with pets, and others facing multiple disadvantages. This follows the recent announcement of £1 million in funding from the GMCA and the government to assist individuals off the streets and into accommodation during the winter months. The investment will also contribute to Greater Manchester's Housing First initiative, which centers on the principle that a secure and decent home is fundamental to a fulfilling life. The new Integrated Settlement currently under negotiation with the government will also allow for the prioritization of funding based on local needs, offering greater flexibility in allocating resources to support various programs. Mr. Burnham stated: 'This investment from the government will provide a strong foundation for us to advance our Housing First mission in 2025. It demonstrates the Deputy Prime Minister's personal commitment to this cause that the package announced today places a strong emphasis on prevention, aligning with the approach we've adopted here in Greater Manchester.
