Thousands flee Santorini as an ongoing swarm of underwater earthquakes shakes the popular Greek island. The government has declared a state of emergency and deployed emergency services to support the island.

The Greek government has declared a state of emergency on the island of Santorini following a week of relentless underwater earthquakes. Thousands of residents and seasonal workers have evacuated the popular tourist destination, seeking refuge on the mainland via ferries. Some areas in Santorini's iconic cliffside towns have been cordoned off due to the risk of rock slides, and schools have remained closed throughout the week. The state of emergency was triggered by a magnitude 5.

2 tremor on Wednesday night, the strongest since the seismic activity began on January 31st. Since then, the island has experienced continued seismic activity, including a 4.6 magnitude quake on Thursday evening between Santorini and the island of Amorgos. Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis assured the public that multiple emergency services had been deployed to support Santorini and surrounding islands. He stated that fire departments, police, coast guard, armed forces, and emergency medical services had augmented their presence with additional personnel and specialized equipment. While experts have confirmed that the seismic activity is unconnected to volcanic activity in the Aegean Sea, they remain uncertain about the duration and potential severity of the earthquake swarm. Vassilis Karastathis, a seismologist and director of research at the National Observatory of Athens, explained that there was no indication yet that the swarm was nearing its conclusion. He stressed that they were still in the midst of the seismic activity and had not observed any easing or signs of regression. The earthquake epicenters are concentrated in a growing cluster between Santorini, Anafi, Amorgos, and Ios. However, the underwater location of these epicenters is considered a mitigating factor, significantly reducing the potential for widespread damage compared to earthquakes originating on land
