The European Union holiday hotspot has warned of a 'tourist overload' as British holidaymakers jet off to the idyllic Greek islands
Warnings have been issued to British tourists regarding concerns of "tourist overload" in Greece and its stunning islands. Locals, increasingly worried by the influx of UK holidaymakers, have been voicing their unease to media outlets.
As an advocate for environmental sustainability, Stephanou, who helped establish the Network for a Sustainable Cyclades, expressed grave concerns, saying: "It's very frightening because if over-tourism continues like this our identity will be lost and the identity and cultural heritage of the Cyclades is our strongest asset."
Pantelaiou highlighted the strain on resources caused by luxury developments, stating: "These villas are 400 square metres, all have pools and they all want to look at the sea. The amount of water and energy they use is incredible, when water is very precious to us," On a similar note, vintner Matthew Argyros warned "tourism destroys the vineyards" reports Birmingham Live.
