A green space in Bateman Gardens is a hot spot for litter, say neighbours
Residents in Hyson Green have expressed their concerns about a green space that attracts litter and drug users. Pictures show household items, furniture, and bin bags fly-tipped on the green space next to Bateman Gardens, while residents have reported seeing needles and bottles as well.
The antisocial behaviour in the area is also another concern of the residents, who are scared about their children playing around the rubbish. Buhle Maphosa, a 37-year-old nurse who lives in Bateman Gardens, said she often hears people shouting abuse. She explained: “We’re worried about all the fly tipping and litter around here but also about all the drug users. We are worried about our kids because they all play around here. “There are many people sitting there all the time and sometimes they’re making noise, using bad language and starting physical fights between each other. There are quite a number of them. “It’s over a month now since all the litter has been here. Usually, when there’s a problem like this, someone comes to collect all the litter but I keep hoping someone will come this time but nothing is happening.” Patrycja Dobrynska, 30, is worried that her eight-year-old son might play around the rubbish when he stays over at his grandparents, who live in Bateman Gardens. She said: "It happens constantly - once it's cleaned up, other people come and dump their stuff again. "My main concern is my son playing around that area with other kids when he's at my parents'. They're just doing what kids do - playing football, cycling, and it's just dangerous for them. There are loads of kids who live in that area. "It's horrible that people keep doing this. I think the council should install some cameras on that corner because otherwise, it's just going to keep happening. "I'm not the only one who thinks this so I really hope we'll get some help." Mohamed Chikhi, 62, is worried about his and his children's safety due to the antisocial behaviour.“It worries me. I have two girls and they come home from university and college and there are different people sitting in that corner. “As a parent, I’m scared about my kids.” Alliandro Roberts, 62, who lives in Bateman Gardens, said: “I do see a lot of fly-tipping in the areaA Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “We encourage anyone who spots litter or fly-tipping to contact us so we can deal with it to help keep our neighbourhoods clean and tidy. We’re grateful to residents who report issues like this to us and we will always do our best to remove rubbish as quickly as possible.” To report litter, fly-tips, or other antisocial behaviour, visit https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/reportantisocial.
