Federal Greens MPs have stood alone in opposing the Prime Minister’s bipartisan condemnation of Hamas’ “heinous acts of terrorism”.
The Prime Minister stood up on Monday, the first sitting day since the gruesome attacks on Israeli citizens, to formally move a motion condemning the atrocities.
The motion was carried 131 to four, with Members Elizabeth Watson-Brown, Stephen Bates and Max Chandler-Mather standing with their leader Adam Bandt.Earlier, in a fiery speech, Mr Bandt conceded there were aspects of the 16-part declaration which deserved support, but fiercely opposed the lack of condemnation of Israel’s retaliatory actions.
“Condemns war crimes perpetrated by the state of Israel, including the bombing of Palestinian civilians, and calls for an immediate ceasefire between all parties and an end to the war on Gaza, recognising also that for there to be peace there must be an end to the state of Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian Territories,” the proposed amendment said.
Their actions closely mirrored those of their state New South Wales counterparts, who last week opposed a similar motion brought about by the Minns Labor government.
