Greens MPs say Labor should immediately explain how many new public housing properties will be delivered under its ‘Kennett scale’ privatisation plans.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ plans to demolish major public housing towers and centralise planning decisions in Victoria represent the biggest privatisation agenda since former Liberal premier Jeff Kennett, the Greens have warned.as a stealth move to sell off valuable public land without a guarantee of any new government-supported homes, the minor party’s federal and state MPs want Labor to explain how many modern dwellings and rooms will be delivered.
“In the middle of a housing crisis with the public housing waiting list at over 125,000 people, instead of using prime public housing land to build more public housing, most of the public land will be sold off to private developers,” they said in a letter co-signed by Greens local members for Melbourne, Prahran, Brunswick and Richmond.
“Labor has made it clear their loyalty is to property developers, but the Greens are fighting across the country for renters and more public housing.
