The general mental health conversation is “keep talking”, “talk to someone”, “check in” and “it’s OK not to be OK”, etc. Despite that last one becoming a bit “Live, Laugh, Love”, this is all good advice. But what about the people you’re talking to? They have shit going on too. And trauma dumping has an effect on whoever catches the load, no matter how healthy their brain might be.

Bella and I have developed some really good coping strategies together. The main thing is that she’ll tell me that she’s struggling and from there we can bring it into the relationship. That often means I need to just be there and listen and be reassuring, other times I’ll take all my clothes off and swing my penis around to make her laugh.

A slightly more serious treatment is to remind her to look outward. I remind her to not indulge the thought too much. I try to remind her to do the things that give her joy and take her mind off herself – that might be a trip to a museum, a painting session, running or just a phone call with her sister. When it’s a bit more serious and she looks like a sad ghost, I’ll have to jump into the cave with her and sit it out. The same is true the other way round, of course.
