Despite new presenter Paddy's McGuinness's cheeky-chap energy, a visit to a bread factory made for stodgy viewingA popular BBC franchise is in crisis following the departure of a high-profile yet ultimately controversial host. The outlook is dire, the pressure to find a suitable replacement intense. Step forward cuddlyMcGuinness’s ability to bring spark to an ailing BBC brand was impressively displayed when he was part of thein 2023, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.
It is fair to say that British television has managed to carry on following Wallace’s banishment from the airwaves. Certainly, does not appear to have been unduly impacted. Though generally a fun watch, the show’s charm has more to do with the behind-the-scenes peek it provides into the manufacturing of beloved household products than with the magnetism of its stars.
There weren’t many surprises in a well-meaning, if ultimately dull episode that ticked along like clockwork. McGuinness had clearly been instructed to “be himself”, and was he ever, as he visited Warburtons bread plant in his hometown of Bolton. Alas, not even this turbo-powered cheeky chap could turn a big boring bread factory into a dough-themed Willy Wonka.
As with everyone else at Warburtons, Bacon was passionate about her job – though I’m not sure the series succeeded in selling industrial-scale baking as a riveting process. It was exactly as you’d expect – lots of people in hairnets standing around big metal tanks flipping switches. If not as torturous as watching paint dry, this wasn’t far off.
