Greggs, known for its savoury pastries, is expanding its menu with new hot items like BBQ chicken burgers and wraps, aiming to compete with fast-food chains. The author attempts these new offerings and compares them to McDonald's, finding them lacking in comparison.
I was eating Greggs way before it became fashionable and its savoury items - and custard slices of course - have always been a big hit in our house.
Among the new ones is its barbecue chicken range, with its BBQ Crispy Chicken Burger and BBQ Chicken Wrap available in selected shops as it takes on the like of McDonald's and KFC with a bigger line-up of hot menu items. In reality it ain't all that. I'm not saying it was inedible, but one bite in and my son and husband declared they 'don't like the sauce' and the addition of cheese and bacon, for an extra £1.05, seemed to make it worse rather than better. The cheese pale and rubbery, the bacon full of fat.
For £3.80, it's not a bad on-the-go snack, but when you consider that supermarket meal deals cost around the same, it's got a lot to compete with. Greggs does its own meal deal options though, from £4.95 for the burger or wrap, with wedges or salad and a drink, so that's decent value.
