The Chelsea and England star is receiving consistent abuse for his appearance - it needs to stop
is among the most exciting and talented young footballers in the world, so of course he’s getting abused on social media. It’s a rite of passage at this point, expected to such an extent it can be easy to ignore. Welcome numbness, my old friend.
This is primary school bullying if your primary school was made up of millions of fully-grown men who weren’t hugged enough as a child. These aren’t jokes or witty commentary – they amount to persecution which would constitute verbal assault in person., seemingly predicated on the falsehood that you have to be conventionally attractive to be a truly elite footballer. Now, Jude Bellingham’s recent Skims underwear campaign is a good branding move, but it has no bearing on his goalscoring ability.
On the moral character front, he appears to be a kind and decent young man, the shy yet charming face of multiple charitable causes who is well-liked by all around him. Nothing else should matter. Any suggestion this is legitimate criticism is just obfuscation – it is a toxic cocktail of ignorance, prejudice and jealousy.
