A homeless centre's neighbours say they've experienced verbal abuse as they oppose an extension

A decision on plans for new homeless accommodation in Grimsby has been delayed until anti-social behaviour linked to existing accommodation is addressed.

When the night shelter has been filled up and people turned away, some homeless people have tried to access a nearby private block of flats to sleep in. Almost 30 residents signed a petition in opposition to the new building, a significant number from nearby Hope House. North East Lincolnshire Council’s planning committee heard that the five-bed new build was for those who are vulnerable and displayed additional needs, which mean they are probably not ready to move into more independent living.

People would stay in the new building between a minimum of six months and maximum several years. “It is domestic in scale and not institutional, and it is important that users see it as their home,” Ms Hodson said. Cllr Beasant said as a trustee he suggested its own consultation of residents on the planned build, but got no support. “It really galls me as such,” he said, because he felt some of the objections could have been dealt with then.
