Chaos in US Congress drags on for second day as Republican rebels continue revolt

Chaos in the US House of Representatives has continued for a second day as a hardline faction of Republican lawmakers voted again to blockThe chamber cannot form until a speaker is in place, but lawmakers from the far-right Freedom Caucus have insisted they will continue to block the nomination of Mr McCarthy, a California RepublicanThe opening session of the House was adjourned on Tuesday after members of Congress voted three times to reject Mr McCarthy.

The Democrats remained united around their new leader Hakeem Jeffries, who received 212 votes, but has little prospect of actually becoming speaker as no Republicans are likely to support him. The right-wing party’s establishment has insisted it will continue to try and push through Mr McCarthy’s nomination, ruling out other prospective candidates such as second-ranking Republican Steve Scalise and hardliner Jim Jordan – who was nominated by the rebels in the second and third rounds.

It is the first time in a century that a majority party has proved unable to push through their chosen candidate for speaker.
