Billionaire backed group stops signature gathering for a ballot measure to bolster mayor’s powers amid fears that the wrong person could win
TogetherSF Action, a group backed by billionaire venture capitalist Michael Moritz, said Tuesday it would stop trying to qualify a measure for the November ballot that would increase the San Francisco mayor’s authority after people expressed concerns that it might give newfound powers to the wrong person if a candidate they did not favor were to win the mayoral race.
In recent weeks, it had become clear in multiple forums, including fundraising, focus groups and polling, that people were uncomfortable with the notion that a successful measure enhancing the mayor’s powers could strengthen the hand of someone they did not support for mayor, Cheng said. The now defunct, “We Need SF To Work Initiative,” aimed to give the mayor sole authority to appoint and remove department heads under most charter commissions and would enable the mayor to appoint deputy mayors.
