Conversations between Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi turned to Liverpool during a meeting between the two over a possible transfer that would have seen the forward join Manchester City. In a new book written by Marti Perarnau, which dives into Guardiola’s time at the Etihad Stadium, details have emerged about a meeting between the two in Barcelona back in August 20202.
The book claims that Messi was ready to leave Barcelona at the time of the meeting, with a move to City a possibility. And one of the topics discussed during the chat was Liverpool. “They discuss Liverpool and Bayern, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel, Kevin De Bruyne and Kalidou Koulibaly. Pep talks him through City's squad, their new signings and the defenders he's got his eye on. Leo has opinions on all of it.”
Despite the U-turn by Messi and the disappointment of the Champions League campaign, Man City claimed their place at the top of the Premier League at the end of the season. Guardiola’s men finished the 2020/21 season on 86 points, with Liverpool in third with 69 points.
