Pep Guardiola subtly warns Manchester City players about their performance and the need for collective effort.
When Pep Guardiola was addressing the reality of Jack Grealish's situation at Manchester City, he made a significant but understated revelation. He was responding to a question about the Etihad crowd. Kevin De Bruyne had made a lighthearted remark about nerves in the stands, and Guardiola was then asked about it. He insisted that the fans are always right and shifted the focus to his City players. 'We will do it.
We will be back again,' Guardiola said regarding his players and their efforts to rectify their recent losing streak. 'I want to fight and try to deliver to make you proud. If you help us it will be easier. If they help us, the distance to come back will be shorter. We are human beings. I know the players want to do it. I know them perfectly. Almost all of them want to do it.' He moved on from this, telling his players to accept their reality but also to be realistic that their performance against West Ham was 'not the best'. He was attempting to convey that a win is welcomed, yet nobody should be complacent that City are out of trouble because they are still far from their best. So why do 'almost all' of the players want to fight their way out of this predicament? Guardiola went on to tell Grealish to improve his productivity in terms of goals and assists, similar to Savinho's recent form. The same message will have been received by any number of underperforming or out-of-form players who understand that the key to regaining their place in the team is consistency. Perhaps the more concerning message is that Guardiola senses not everyone in his squad is fully committed. He has dropped or sold players who have prioritized themselves over the team in recent seasons, so whoever he is referring to will be aware that they are under scrutiny this month or in the summer. The comment was put to Guardiola on Friday, but he simply said he couldn't recall the answer he gave. That is understandable, although it wouldn't have been in his best interests to further inflame the situation. But it will have been heard loud and clear by whoever it was intended for - he didn't need to add anything more to spark a witch hunt. Now, it is up to any player who Guardiola's words apply to, to prove the manager wrong in the coming weeks. They have been put on notice
