Charges against Aguilar Mendez were dropped earlier this month.
In this screen grab from a video, Virgilio Aguilar is shown outside the Baker County Sheriff's Office after his release, on March 15, 2024.Virgilio Aguilar Mendez, the teen migrant from Guatemala who was arrested following the death of a Florida police officer, has been freed from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's custody his lawyers told ABC News.
Aguilar Mendez, who does not speak English, attempted to walk away from the officer, but a struggle ensued, according to body camera video and audio of the incident obtained by ABC News. Baez also fought back against a police report that claimed Aguilar Mendez "armed himself with a folding pocket knife" that was in his pocket after he was placed in handcuffs. Officers claimed he ignored commands to drop the knife and that the knife "had to be forcefully removed from the defendant's hands." Body camera video, reviewed by ABC News, did not clearly show the moment he allegedly grabbed the knife.
