Legendary British rock guitarist John Sykes , best known for his work with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake , has died at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer. Sykes' representative confirmed the news on Tuesday, stating that the musician passed away after a 'hard-fought battle with cancer.' Born in Reading, England, Sykes began his musical journey in 1980 with the heavy metal band Tygers of Pan Tang.
He spent two years touring with the band before joining the iconic Irish rock group Thin Lizzy as their lead guitarist. With Thin Lizzy, Sykes achieved international success, performing at legendary venues worldwide and contributing to hits like the global anthem 'The Boys Are Back In Town.' He later became synonymous with Whitesnake's 1987 re-recording of the power ballad 'Here I Go Again,' further solidifying his place in rock history. Sykes' musical journey was marked by collaborations and various projects. He performed on the Thunder And Lightning album in the early 1980s and toured Europe with Phil Lynott's band, The Three Musketeers. He was recruited by David Coverdale to join Whitesnake, appearing on the 1984 album 'Slide It In' and co-writing the self-titled 1987 album, which featured hits like 'Still of the Night' and 'Is This Love.' After leaving Whitesnake, he returned to the UK and formed the supergroup Blue Murder alongside Tony Franklin and Carmine Appice. Sykes also enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing his first solo album 'Out of My Tree' in 1995 and his final solo album 'Bad Boy Live!' in 2004. He also fronted a reformed Thin Lizzy line-up from the 1990s to 2009 with Scott Gorham.A statement on Sykes' website described him as a man of exceptional musical talent who was also kind, charismatic, and thoughtful. It highlighted his independent spirit and his unwavering support for the underdog. The statement ended by acknowledging the profound impact of his loss while expressing hope that the light of his memory would continue to shine. Sykes is survived by his three sons, James, John Jr., and Sean, with whom he shared a deep connection despite his divorce from Jennifer Brooks-Sykes in 1999.
