In a profile interview with Nylon, published Tuesday, Stefani revealed that despite their lovey-dovey public image, she still gets insecure about her relationship with husband Blake Shelton . Stefani and Shelton, who met as judges on the singing competition show The Voice, began dating in 2015 after they both went through divorces , then married in 2021 in a ceremony officiated by Carson Daly. “Purple Irises” was written during one of those moments of emotional fragility and self-doubt.
“Everything fades / Everything dies / Put me in a vase, but you can't / You can't stop time,” Stefani sings on the track, with other callouts to aging and the passage of time, worrying “do you still think I’m pretty? / And are you happy?” while reminiscing about picking—what else?—purple irises and the fear that someone else will come along.
