There’s no way to sugarcoat this, so I won’t: The Falcons selection of Michael Penix Jr. is the most nonsensical and bewildering draft day decision in the history of the NFL Draft.
However, when you do that, and then eight minutes later, you draft a QB with the 8th overall pick, you leave the impression that you didn’t really believe in Cousins or have no idea what you are doing.First, it needs to be said that there’s nothing wrong with Michael Penix Jr. He was a great college player, and he has every chance of achieving greatness in the NFL.
The difference is that Jordan Love was the 26th pick in the first round, not the 8th. There is an enormous financial difference between what the 26th pick gets paid and what the 8th pick gets paid. Michael Penix Jr. did not take a top-30 visit to Flowery Branch. The Falcons only attended a 45 minute workout and met with him at the Combine.
