A gym owner in Nottinghamshire has been scammed out of over £31,000, leading to the postponement of the gym's opening. The owner purchased equipment at lower prices from a fraudster posing as a gym clearance seller.
A Nottinghamshire town gym owner has had to postpone the opening of the venue after being scammed out of more than £31,000. Dean Smith, owner of Gym Beasts, took over the old Boots site on Commercial Road, Bulwell, after the Beeston-based health and beauty retailer closed its doors after a review of customer demand and store locations.
Dean said he had no reason to suspect anything was wrong at the start of the trade, as the fraudster delivered some pieces of equipment. He also received pictures of the fitness machines, which led Dean further to trust the scammer. "He was really charming when we spoke and I had no reason to doubt him." Once Dean signed the lease for the building, he asked the scammer for the mirrors and mats to be delivered before the equipment.
"Not only do I feel a mug, I feel bad for our kids as we haven’t taken them away for a couple years as all my savings were being spent on setting up a gym." After the devastating realisation, Dean's friends set up a Go Fund Me page which raised £750, as well as lending and gifting him money to help him cover the equipment costs.
