Haas team principal Gunther Steiner said there was “no reason to look to change” the driver pairing for next year.
Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen will continue to race for Haas in Formula 1 next year after the team confirmed an unchanged lineup for 2024 on Thursday. Here’s what you need to know:
Hülkenberg returned to F1 in 2023 after three years away from full-time racing and has impressed for Haas.Team principal Gunther Steiner said there was “no reason to look to change” the driver pairing for next year despite Haas’s lack of performance on the track.“Kevin and Nico are clearly enjoying their time in the sport,” Steiner said in a statement. “They both have mature heads on their shoulders, and they fundamentally understand what it is we’re asking of them.
“It’s nice to get things sorted early for next season to just keep the focus on racing and improving performance,” added Hülkenberg. “We’re competing in a very tight midfield and I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve done together so far and taking that forward into 2024.”Continuity always looked set to be the focus for Haas going into 2024.
But the team has never shown any sign of doubt about the capability of its drivers. As early as the Canadian Grand Prix in June, Steiner indicated he was happy with the lineup and not looking at any alternatives, nor has anyone been linked with the team. Haas has traditionally preferred early driver announcements as a way to put an end to any potential speculation.
Magnussen has looked a step behind Hülkenberg at points this year but has been open about the car’s struggles turning many of his strengths as a driver into weaknesses. If the team can resolve the problems and design a more consistent, stable car for next year, then it could allow the Dane to unlock the kind of performance that made his own comeback in 2022 such a huge success.
