Hollywood icon Halle Berry returns to horror in Never Let Go, but it's been long overdue since the Oscar-winning star's 2003 mystery Gothika
Horror might just be Halle Berry’s calling ‘Maybe I’ll do more,’ are the four words Halle Berry recently said when asked about starring in horror movies and, frankly, the only ones I wanted to hear from her. The screen icon has played everything from a cat to a drug addict, a former assassin, a UFC fighter and even a Flintstone . She’s won a best actress Oscar and dazzled on-screen as a Bond Girl, ticking off almost every actor’s bucket list.
It may not be a perfect horror but it does have all the ingredients for a sturdy mystery, including a deliciously generous level of suspense. I think I’ve actually come to appreciate the film now, more than 20 years down the line, as while brilliant, we’re now in the era of elevated horror that focuses on more complex narratives seen in modern gems such as Hereditary and Midsommar. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for elevated horror but sometimes you just want a good old-fashioned ghost story.
