Halle Berry learned how to skin a squirrel for her upcoming thriller 'Never Let Go': 'It was a challenge,' she said of the role.

Jessica is a staff writer at Entertainment Weekly, where she covers TV, movies, and pop culture. Her work has appeared in Bustle, NYLON, Cosmopolitan, InStyle, and more. She lives in California with her dog.At Lionsgate's CinemaCon panel on Wednesday, the star spoke about portraying a mother of two sons who live out in the wilderness, sharing that she learned how to skin a squirrel for the role. The admission drew gasps from some in the audience.

"There was no electricity, no lights, my character skinning squirrels," Berry recounted. "And they're eating bugs and frogs — raw frogs — in the woods." "It was a challenge," Berry said, noting that there was "a little bit of Method acting" going on. "I had to really skin a squirrel. These things wildly challenged me to create some reality within this world that felt so foreign."Berry was very much up to the task, though. "I am a bonafide adrenaline junkie," she said. "The bigger the rollercoaster, the bigger the bungee jump, the longer the zipline, I'm your girl.

From director Alexandre Aja, the psychological thriller centers on a family of three haunted by an evil entity. Whenever they leave the safety of their cabin to venture into the woods, they are bound by rope to the home. The family's safety and surroundings come into question when one of the boys asks if the evil is real.

“It was a creepy environment," Berry said. The film "reminded me how I would protect my children with my life," she added. "What would you do to protect your children? This role gave me a chance to really take that to the limit.
