Spooky season is here, but you could be risking a hefty fine and points on your licence if you get into the spirit a little too much while driving.
Drivers have been issued a warning over common mistakes made around Halloween, potentially resulting in a fine of up to £5,000 and six points.
As many as one in three drivers admitted to previously having worn fancy dress while driving, according to data from a 2023 Scrap Car Comparison survey carried out last month. The research quizzed 1,507 UK drivers, with a total of 32.38 per cent answering ‘always, frequently, occasionally’ or ‘rarely’ when asked whether they have driven while wearing a fancy-dress outfit.
The experts warn that £100 on the spot fines may be issued as well as a potential charge of careless driving - with this charge having a maximum fine of £5,000 as well as between three and six points on your driving licence. While there are no specific laws in place to stop drivers from adding novelty accessories to cars, Rule 30 of the Road Vehicles Regulations 1986 states that drivers must, at all times, "have a full view of the road and traffic ahead of the motor vehicle".
Additionally, Rue 53 of the Act states that no mascot, emblem or other ornamental objects should be in a position where it is "likely to strike any person with whom the vehicle may collide".
