Going on for 44 years since the overthrow of the Shah, Tehran has tried to destabilise the region with Israel in the frontline.

Iran’s longstanding support for Hamas, Hezbollah and other terrorist organisations is well known. As is Iran’s continual calls for Israel’s destruction. This has been going on for 44 years, yet there are those in the West who still think a deal can be done with the Iranian regime. They are mistaken.Starting with the overthrow of the Shah in February 1979 that had been preceded by months of mass demonstrations, it culminated in the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The same lack of moderation occurred in the immediate aftermath of the US diplomats being taken hostage on November 4, 1979, when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini made a conscious decision to support the hardliners. Those calling for moderation were ignored, effectively putting revolutionary Iran on its current path.

On taking power in January 2021, the Biden administration reversed course and attempted to get the Iran nuclear deal back on track. But the June 2021 election of hardliner Ebrahim Raisi as president led to a toughening of the Iranian position. With more than 700 Israelis killed, more than 130 taken hostage and thousands injured, along with a Palestinian death toll of about 700 and risinghas sent another signal that it intends to cause maximal regional chaos whenever it wants.

Combined with the Chinese brokered rapprochement with Saudi Arabia earlier this year, the invitation to join the BRICS group and a recent deal with the US that resulted in a prisoner exchange along with the transfer of $US6 billion in unfrozen funds, the regime is right to think its long-term strategy is paying off – at least for now. And it has global ramifications, especially in global energy and commodity markets.
