Iran-backed groups harry Israel on four fronts: missiles fly over the Red Sea, fighting rages in Gaza, firefights go on in Lebanon and unrest dogs the West Bank.
| A missile attack from Yemen has forced Israel to use its “Arrow” aerial defence system for the first time since the start of its three-week-old conflict with Hamas, raising the grim possibility of a new front in Israel’s war.
The IDF also reported that two of its military posts had seen incoming anti-tank missiles, and were returning fire. There were also two failed launches against Israeli positions, which were being met with IDF artillery fire.In Gaza, where Israel last weekend launched its ground offensive to wipe out Hamas, both sides reported fierce fighting – albeit with no sign of the release or recapture of any more of the 240 hostages that Hamas seized in Israel on October 7.
The IDF said its forces were moving deeper into Gaza City, with some media reports suggesting there may be as many as 20,000 Israel troops now in the territory. The military’s elite “weasel” squads are probably already penetrating the militant group’s reputed 500-kilometre network of underground tunnels.Israel claimed to have killed “dozens of terrorists” on Tuesday, but also lost two of its own soldiers during combat in northern Gaza.
“Israel Air Force detection systems tracked the trajectory of the missile, which was successfully intercepted by the Arrow aerial defence system at the optimal operational moment and location,” the IDF said afterwards. There had been “no threat or risk to civilians”. “It is natural that the resistance groups and movements do not remain silent in the face of the Zionist regime’s crimes and America’s full support for the Zionist regime,” he reportedly said while meeting the Emir of Qatar in Doha.
In Washington, FBI director Christopher Wray told a congressional hearing that the Israel-Hamas war meant it was “time to be concerned” about the domestic terrorist threat to the United States.
