Human rights activist Julian Burnside, KC, who sought the Senate position in a ballot against Lidia Thorpe two years ago, said she had treated Greens supporters badly.
A furious row over former Greens senator Lidia Thorpe has sparked demands she give up her Senate seat because it belongs to the party and not to her, with a key preselection rival rebuking her for defecting to the crossbench.
While some defended the process as a fair fight – Thorpe won the support of 58 per cent of the 2342 members who voted – others said the membership had taken a gamble on the outspoken candidate and discovered it had not paid off. While this masthead said on Tuesday that former Greens leader Richard Di Natale had backed Thorpe in the contest to replace him when he quit parliament in 2020, several sources rejected this.
Thorpe rejected the idea she had “dudded” voters and did not deserve to keep her seat by pointing to her support from black activists who called for a treaty during the January 26 protest marches.
