Netflix's latest Harlan Coben adaptation, 'Run Away', has started filming in Greater Manchester, boasting an impressive cast including James Nesbitt, Minnie Driver, and Ruth Jones. The series follows the story of Simon, a seemingly perfect dad whose life unravels when his daughter goes missing. His search for her uncovers a web of dark secrets, typical of Coben's thrillers.
An all-star cast and Netflix film crews have returned to Greater Manchester to begin filming the latest Harlan Coben thriller being adapted for the screen. The streaming service has had huge success with its most recent adaptations of Coben's hit books which have been shot on location across the region including Missing You this year and Fool Me Once last year. Now a new series, based on Coben's book Run Away , is being filmed in the region by Manchester's Quay Street Productions.
It boasts an all-star cast including Cold Feet's James Nesbitt, Gavin and Stacey's Ruth Jones and film star Minnie Driver. It follows the story of dad Simon whose seemingly perfect life 'falls apart' when his teenage daughter runs away. His search to find her uncovers lots of dark secrets, as tends to be the way with Harlan Coben thrillers. Like previous adaptations of the author's work, it will transport the action from America in the book to the UK for the series. The leading role of Simon Greene is being played by Cold Feet star James Nesbitt, who is back in Manchester to film the new Netflix show. He starred in the most recent Harlan Coben Netflix adaptation of Missing You as the sinister Calligan. He also starred in 2023's Coben thriller Stay Close, as a murder detective, which was also filmed across the north west. James was this week pictured braving some windy and wintry weather on location in one of Greater Manchester's bleakest locations - on Saddleworth Moor. He was spotted on sets off the main Manchester Road around Kirklees and Marsden in Oldham this week along with cast and crew. The film crew was pictured filming at properties just off the main A62 Manchester Road. They were seen filming near to a large brick property as well as the former Great Western Inn pub at Marsden which are set to feature in the new Netflix drama. The plot of the drama revolves around Simon (played by Nesbitt) who is a seemingly lucky man with a loving wife and kids, great job, and beautiful home. But when his eldest daughter Paige (played by Ellie de Lange) runs away, everything begins to fall apart. Coben says he immediately knew Nesbitt would be perfect for this role. Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, he said: 'Jimmy just has so much range. He’s so natural and authentic at all times.' He adds: 'He’s an empathetic actor in the sense that he feels, and then you feel for him.” Simon's wife Ingrid Greene will be played by Oscar-winning actress Minnie Driver, while Ruth Jones will take the role of Elena Ravenscroft. Finty Williams will play Enid Corval, and was pictured among the cast on set up in Saddleworth. Other star names confirmed in the cast include ex-EastEnder Tracy-Ann Obermann, Vera star Joe McGann and The Critic's Alfred Enoch. However, one name not returning for this year's Coben thriller is Richard Armitage, despite his impressive run of roles in the most recent adaptations. Quay Street Productions was founded by multi-award-winning producer Nicola Shindler OBE in 2021, and they have had huge success with their most recent Netflix adaptations. Fool Me Once, starring Michelle Keegan and Joanna Lumley, premiered globally on 1st January 2024 and became the most watched series on Netflix of 2024 with 108m views globally. It is currently ranked 7th on their most-popular watched series of all time with 98,200,000 views in the first 90 days. Missing You, starring Rosalind Eleazar and Sir Lenny Henry, debuted on Netflix on 1st January 2025
