Property owners from North Bergen to Bayonne and West Hudson are feeling the pain after the 2024 Hudson County budget was introduced Thursday afternoon by the county Board of Commissioners.

Only Jersey City, whose average property owners would be paying $66 less than last year, was spared an increase in the proposed spending plan. Property owners in Secaucus and Weehawken would only see a minimal increase in their tax burden. The tax levy included in the budget is $429.2 million, $15 million more than last year, and calls for a 3.6% increase in taxes for property owners.

Harrison’s taxes would rise 11.8% to nearly $7 million, and the average property taxpayer would see a $219 spike. If this budget were approved, Union City would be second with an average $191 increase, followed by Bayonne at $187, Hoboken $184, Guttenberg $174, East Newark $164, West New York $154, North Bergen $128, Kearny $108, Weehawken $53 and Secaucus.

The decrease on the Jersey City portion of the tax levy would mark the third straight year residents’ taxes were lowered. Last year the average property owner paid $27 less than 2022. The proposed spending plan includes $3.5 million for the development of a community center in Mercer Park, on the Bayonne-Jersey City border and $3 million for the bird sanctuary at James J. Braddock North Hudson Park.
