Teddy Sheringham has criticized Manchester United for missing out on transfer deals for Harry Kane and Declan Rice , saying the club needs to sign ''top players'' who ''lead by example''. United have spent over £1.6 billion on new recruits since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure but have won little silverware. Under Erik ten Hag alone, the club has spent around £600 million, with players like Antony, Mason Mount, Casemiro and Andre Onana failing to live up to their price tags.
United has taken a more cautious approach this January, seemingly learning from past mistakes. However, they continue to be linked with high-profile players, with left wing-back and attack considered priorities. Speaking on the Football's Greatest podcast, Sheringham said he's optimistic about new manager Ruben Amorim but believes the club needs to sign top players. He pointed to Kane joining Bayern Munich and Rice moving to Arsenal as missed opportunities. Sheringham believes United needs to return to the approach of signing proven players who lead by example, similar to when Ferguson signed players like Gary Pallister, Roy Keane, Paul Ince and Wayne Rooney. Despite United's decline, Sheringham believes the club can still be a ''big draw'' if they get back on track.
