EXCLUSIVE: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced a number of hurdles, but they are still set for their toughest challenge yet when it comes to their two young children
In the five years they've been married, Prince Harry and Meghan have encountered numerous hurdles as a couple – but last week, it was clear they’re set to face their toughest challenge yet: the future safety and wellbeing of their children.
“I feel fortunate that our children are at an age, quite young, so this isn’t in our immediate future, but I also feel frightened at how social media is continuing to change and this will be in front of us,” she said. It’s a narrative that many parents of young people will relate to but, for Harry and Meghan, the fierce instinct to shield Archie and Lilibet from harm is an even greater challenge, given their unique positions in life.
Parenting expert Amanda Jenner concurs, but says that agreeing on how to help their children navigate social media could prove tricky for the couple, not just due to their current circumstances, but because of their very different experiences growing up. Indeed their very contrasting approaches to parenting could put their strong relationship to the test.
Where Harry is governed by his fears around restrictions and privacy, Meghan, whose father Thomas Markle was a Hollywood lighting director, grew up in Los Angeles - an environment where celebrity status was normalised. She has even admitted in a past interview that if Archie and Lilibet want to follow in her footsteps and become actors, she’ll support them if it brings them “joy”.
"She will feel strongly that she doesn’t want this for her children. It’s clear that Harry feels the opposite based on his own experiences, but what he’s doing is putting his fears onto his children. It comes from a place of complete love; his subconscious mind sees danger and automatically goes into ‘fight or flight’ mode.”
