Researchers have developed a novel programmable metafluid, adjusting springiness, optics, viscosity, and transitioning between various states.

This is the first time a metafluid has demonstrated a change from a Newtonian to a non-Newtonian state, according to the team.According to a new Harvard study published on April 4, engineers have pulled the wraps off a special metafluid. But what makes it so unique?

For instance, the new metafluid could potentially aid engineers in developing hydraulic actuators. It could also program robots and intelligent shock absorbers capable of releasing energy based on impact strength.in a variety of applications. However, these applications tend to involve artificially manufacturing solid materials. Additionally, properties are typically determined by their structure rather than composition.

When applying pressure to the liquid, the capsules break open, forming a half-sphere that resembles a lens.Multiple characteristics of the liquid— such as its opacity and viscosity— change during these transitions.The team demonstrated the metafluid’s versatility by loading it into a hydraulic robotic gripper.

Additionally, the metafluid’s optical characteristics vary with pressure. Similar to how air bubbles cause aerated water to seem white when the capsules are round, they scatter light and cause the liquid to become opaque.
