It's unlikely that we'll see Mansfield-born Sir Ed making a splash in the county
Ed Davey may be a Nottinghamshire man, but the county will not be featuring heavily in the thoughts of the Liberal Democrats leader over the coming weeks. Since its founding in 1988, the Liberal Democrats have never got a Nottinghamshire MP elected and it seems that getting its first is not on the party's priority list for the July general election.
Despite such fondness, Liberal Democrat representation across Nottinghamshire's councils perhaps leaves the national party reluctant to dedicate major resources to the county. Across the seven district and borough councils, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council - there are just 11 Liberal Democrat members. Those hoping to catch the Liberal Democrat leader conducting one of his now famous political stunts in Nottinghamshire may therefore be disappointed.
Yet the party has not given up on Nottinghamshire altogether. It is still fielding a candidate in every one of the county's 11 seats and despite having never gained a Nottinghamshire MP, past performance in some general elections shows it is by no means an impossibility for the Liberal Democrats. Although the party has been without an elected member of Nottingham City Council since 2011, a targeted campaign at the last local elections in 2023 once again saw an incredibly tight result in the Castle Ward. Overall though, many argue that the Liberal Democrats have never quite recovered from their years in coalition with the Conservatives and the party under Sir Ed is resolutely focused on boosting its grouping of MPs in the House of Commons.
