New laws have stripped WA's environmental watchdog of its power to consider carbon emissions when approving high-polluting projects. So is the EPA now a toothless tiger?
Some of Australia's biggest carbon polluters have a couple of reasons to celebrate this week. The government also made a big change to its greenhouse gas policy that will have implications for fossil fuel projects.
"What we will have now is no assessment of the impacts of these projects on the climate – and that's exactly what the fossil fuel industry wants." "Our environmental reforms will slash green tape and reduce duplication while maintaining the highest environmental standards," Premier Roger Cook says."This has been an appalling month for environmental protection in WA," Greens MP Brad Pettitt said.
Dr Hatton says part of the reason he needed to introduce the 2019 guidelines was because back then, the safeguard mechanism was much weaker. "Under this regime, what could happen is that the state condition to do carbon capture and storage would be removed," he says.
