Comic storyteller Rob Carlton has been Kerry Packer, will star in Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallow Universe and will make you laugh at Brisbane’s Comedy Festival this weekend.
Comic, actor and writer Rob Carlton sets the scene for his one-man show at the Brisbane Comedy Festival at the Brisbane Powerhouse this weekend.and armed with only a black chair the comic will spin four tales.
There is the one about cousins, sex and his grandmother’s funeral, the one about lying, the one about his dad and the one about musical theatre.“I tell a story when I’m about 22 which is the about cousins at the wedding; and I tell another when I’m about 25, where I lie about my credentials and I get flown across the world to be a continuity expert on a feature film.Is it true, I ask politely.“And the story I tell is so extreme.
Carlton was invited to the Brisbane Comedy Festival three weeks ago on the recommendation of the Canberra Comedy Festival after another artist was forced to cancel.“I told them three weeks ago the show is a 20-minute bump in, there are five lighting cues, no sound cues, there is one prop - it’s a black chair - and I bring it.“That was 11am on the Friday.
“At 3pm on the Friday I get a call from the Brisbane Comedy Festival director saying, ‘Rob, I’ve heard about your show. It sounds amazing - read ‘I hear its available and can be set up in 20 minutes’. “They showed me that venue, and it was like dream come true. A Spiegeltent-type venue for my type of show. It is just so grungy and live.”Friday and Saturday, 7pm; and Sunday, 6pm, in the Pleasuredome at the Brisbane Powerhouse.
