Hays CISD fires substitute teacher for assigning controversial puppet show involving murder, death, and a mass shooting scene without proper guidance.

by CBS AustinA Hays CISD substitute theater arts teacher was effectively fired after assigning students a controversial puppet show . investigation into a controversial class assignmentThe substitute, who was suspended last Friday, had reportedly assigned students to perform a puppet show involving murder or death scenes, with one group depicting a mass shooting .

According to a statement released by the district on Monday, the Human Resources Department met with the substitute teacher to determine the nature of the assignment. While the investigation could not establish the exact parameters of the task, the district concluded that the substitute's failure to provide proper guidance, correct, intervene, or interrupt the performance depicting a mass shooting was improper and unacceptable.

As a result, the substitute teacher, who was hired by Hays CISD in January 2024, will no longer be invited to work in the district. The district said it maintains its apology to students and parents, as expressed in its original statement on Friday, but believes that no further action is necessary regarding the substitute beyond terminating their employment.Full statement from Hays CISD:

The district’s Human Resources Department met with the substitute Monday following the late Friday afternoon suspension of the substitute. The investigation has not been able to determine which of the conflicting accounts of the assignment is correct, whether it was for puppets to be murdered or be part of a death scene similar to a Shakespearian play. One group of students did perform a brief scene involving a mass shooting.
