Former Anchorage Health Department Director Joe Gerace has agreed to pay $30,000 to the Alaska Department of Veterans and Military Affairs after being accused of civil fraud, but he does not admit to doing anything wrong.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - in January 2023 alleges that Gerace was paid $94,783.69 over 203 days by the State Active Duty service for a higher rate of compensation than he was entitled to for duty with the Alaska State Defense Force .
According to new filings, Gerace has agreed to pay the money back within the next 120 days. If he doesn’t, the plaintiff — the State of Alaska and Department of Veterans and Military Affairs — will “not act on the judgment unless the defendant, Joseph Gerace, fails to comply.” Before the fraud allegations, as Anchorage Health Department Director, Gerace was in charge of responding to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the homeless crisis in Anchorage, but his resumeof inflating his military service, as well as academic achievements, on his resume. That led to questions about how Gerace was able to be hired by the administration without a thorough vetting of his resume.
“Upon hearing the shocking news yesterday about Joe Gerace, I immediately tasked the Municipal Manager’s Office and Human Resources Department to investigate the hiring of former Anchorage Health Director Joe Gerace. I expect an in-depth and thorough investigation into this matter, and HR hiring practices moving forward,” Bronson said in a news release from Aug. 9, 2022.that investigation really was and were concerned about a lack of transparency in the report.
