🟡How Peter Kay became a comedy giant He's the most popular comedian in the country but is also fiercely private. Here his colleagues and collaborators to dig into the man behind the microphone ⬇️

As Toby Foster and his comedian mates drove home after a gig in Manchester in the late 90s, there was only one thing the minibus wanted to talk about: the compère, a young comic called Peter Kay.

Most comedians have to operate at a constant rolling boil, with theatre tours supported by a couple of podcasts, social media work and maybe aslot. Kay does none of that, but still has at least three working tribute acts who will come and do his material at your party or function. Dave Perkin set up the Frog and Bucket comedy club in Manchester, and was there when Kay did his first gig in November 1995.

“He still wasn’t sure that comedy would give him a permanent income,” Perkin says. Soon though, Perkin had established comedians telling him not to use Kay as a compère. He was too funny, they said, and going on after him was murder.“He just made you laugh,” says Foster. “And without any of the self-consciousness of wondering why you’re laughing, and without taking anything apart and analysing why you’re laughing.

Kay based the look of Max on Gillman. “What that shows is Peter is a magpie,” he says. “He gathers, and he’s got a really, really keen sense of human comedy.”
