A wind power mogul had a significant win in a nine-year legal battle that has bounced from Bangkok to Hong Kong, then Belize and Britain and beyond.
When Nopporn Suppipat was the first to do so in 2009, it made him rich. He shared the profits with the landholders who hosted the wind farms in reliably breezy parts of the country’s central and north-eastern regions, and he landed on rich lists and the cover of. He had bold plans to expand, and his company Wind Energy Holding was valued at more than $US1 billion as he explored the chance to float it.
Nopporn launched a legal battle over control of his company and his missing millions. The fight has been waged in courtrooms in Thailand, Hong Kong, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, Singapore, and Geneva for international arbitration hearings. As his pursuit continued, he became convinced that the man he entrusted to control his company, his own former executives, and top figures at Thailand’s oldest bank were working against him.Now he has struck back, with a $1.
“The nature and extent of [some defendants’] lies was at times breathtaking, as was their relaxed attitude to the production of false documents in order to deceive and mislead others. It is plain that truth has become an alien concept to some of these defendants.” Nopporn was not alone in testifying about Nop’s purported relationship with the future king. Another witness said during the trial: “If you walk into his office he has a New Year card that is signed by the crown prince … And many times he has told me the story that, oh, he just had dinner with the crown prince; he just went to this place with the crown prince, etc.
