By storing up to twice as much energy per kilogram as traditional lithium-ion batteries, they could allow electric vehicles to travel twice as far between charges without adding weight to the battery pack. According to researchers, they’re also more affordable and environmentally friendly due to their utilization of readily available, abundant resources.
“We are very excited about the discovery of this new material. The drastic increase in electrical conductivity in sulfur is a surprise and scientifically very interesting,” said study co-senior author Ping Liu, a professor of nanoengineering and director of the Sustainable Power and Energy Center at UC San Diego, in a statement. The novel crystal material has a low melting point —lower than the temperature of a steaming cup of coffee.
The team claims its novel cathode material’s low melting point allows for interface repair, a long-needed fix for these batteries. This new material will make future solid-state batteries with a high energy density possible.
