Steve Barclay making preparations for fresh talks with union leaders amid growing hopes of a deal to end industrial action that is piling pressure on the NHS during a serious winter crisis

, after the union accused the Health Secretary of cancelling planned Wednesday morning talks so he could undertake broadcast interviews.that negotiations need to be “ramped up” as “the clock is furiously ticking” as more strikes are being planned for “very early” next month unless nurses are offered better pay.

Mr Barclay on Wednesday rejected demands to reopen this year’s pay deal, insisting it would be wrong to “go all the way back to April and retrospectively look at April when we’re already under way in terms of this year’s pay review body”. But he indicated that a shorter backdating could be in the offing, telling Sky News: “The unions made representations about that and what the Prime Minister said at the weekend is nothing is off the table.”

Former health minister Steve Brine, now the chair of the Commons Health Select Committee, meanwhile repeated calls for a “swifter” pay review process to set wages for 2023-4 and said a one-off payment for this year was “still a discussion within Government”.new minimum service legislation tabled by ministersThe Unison union’s head of health, Sara Gorton, said the laws would “inflame” industrial relations across many sectors.
